Histological and cytological laboratory
Histological and cytological laboratory
The laboratory for histological, cytological and simultaneous genetic analysis of biological tissue samples is equipped with specialized infrastructure designed for complex, integrated, fully compatible evaluation of experimental samples of biological specimen, including cytological samples, cell smears and tissue samples that also include tumor samples and body fluids.
The assessment is performed for the purpose of complex cytological and histological analysis of samples with evaluation of potential markers and their morphometric quantification, as well as genetic analysis of cells with a focus on DNA microarray.

It is exactly the DNA microarray assessment that represents one of the highly efficient and remarkably effective basic systems for evaluation of genetic changes in an assessed specimen. The system allows deployment across a wide range of experimental, diagnostic and research areas. It consists of instrument modules enabling comprehensive evaluation of tissue samples. The individual processes and modules follow on each other in a sequence and have been tested in laboratory conditions in order to verify compatibility in experimental and scientific practice.

The laboratory is equipped with several functionally interconnected modules, including:
- An automatic excision workplace allowing fast and efficient comprehensive processing of tissue samples, including macroscopic description and automatic photography and archiving of the finders.
- A vacuum automatic tissue processor with accelerated tissue processing allows subsequent processing of selected tissue samples following previous fixation with 4% formaldehyde into liquid paraffin (FFPE). The applied processing method is xylene-free. The tissues processed in this way have been tested and can also be used for later molecular genetic analyses.
- The automatic microtome allows the subsequent cutting of tissue samples into thin sections, which can be used in histological processing on a slide and microscopic evaluation. The samples can also be used as a source of material for genetic testing. The device ensures a standard thickness and quality of the histological section.
- The dyeing and covering machine enables implementation of a full range of histological staining of tissue sections on a slide. The module is optimized for sample processing to ensure standardization of the result for microscopic evaluation.
- The microscopic equipment includes an optical microscope that may be used for basic optical evaluation of slides with specimen, equipped with a polarizing device and an attached image digitizing device. The laboratory also enables morphometric evaluation of findings.
- The automatic microscope for LBC enables the use of LBC samples in evaluation processes and the correlation of results with other histological and molecular genetic analyses.
- The modular reader is designed to measure absorbance and fluorescence with high sensitivity; this device is necessary for quality and quantity control of input DNA samples.
The hybridization station is designed to hybridize DNA on a microarray chip. Hybridization takes place under precisely defined conditions so that the whole process is strictly standardized and reproducible. - The hybridization station allows the processing of microarray slides with independent chambers for processing multiple samples on one slide.
- The DNA microarray scanner is a key device for genetic analysis in the system and enables the user scan the final product.
The histological laboratory in Nitra was established for the purpose of basic processing of biological tissue samples. It enables complete processing of formalin-fixed tissue samples, as well as excision including macroscopic description.

The histological laboratory in Nitra was established with the aim of basic processing of biological tissue samples. It enables complete processing of formalin-fixed tissue samples as well as excision including macroscopic description. The available tissue processor enables the subsequent processing of selected tissue samples into paraffin blocks (FFPE) and the subsequent cutting of tissue samples into thin sections, their basic histological as well as immunohistochemical staining and microscopic evaluation. The microscopic equipment includes an optical microscope enabling optical evaluation of the slides.
The laboratory operates the necessary equipment for research into potential diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic protein and glycoprotein markers.
